Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits SC-300Customer Review: GREAT investment for mixing education and fun! Summary: 5 Stars
My son LOVES these snap on circuits, and I love the educational value as well! We've spent a lot of time reading through the projects and progressing to more complex ones. The instructions don't go into a lot of detail about how each part (or electricity in general) works, but they do give a good, simple introduction. Enough to have lots of fun. This kit would be great for science labs, given a little supplemental reading material. I HIGHLY recommend this for the science classroom--it's a great resource, and simple to assemble, disassemble, and organize! Note though--this isn't the type of toy that will automatically teach a kid how electricity works...you've got to do some teaching (and learning) yourself. The circuits are designed to help kids demonstrate and apply knowledge, and help them explore new possibilities--this is a supplement to teaching, not a teacher!
Customer Review: Great Fun for Dad and Son Summary: 5 Stars
My 5 year old son is always connecting wires from the VCR to the TV to the receiver etc., so I thought I would buy him something to help him develop his interests. This has not disappointed us. The manual has easy to follow diagrams and starts with the simplest circuits and ends with more advanced circuits. The first few we made together, but now my son can't keep his hands off it and is able to build them on his own.
Each project teaches about a certain aspect of electronics. For example there is a project where you turn an LED around and it lights up showing that the current will only flow in one direction. As my son builds each project, I explain how it works by reading the provided text. Not only does he learn how to think and follow instructions, he learns how electronics work, and best of all we get to spend quality time together.
Customer Review: Big improvement over classic spring-terminal electronics kits Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this based on reviews, and am very happy with it. It builds the same kinds of projects that the classic spring-terminal boards did (lights, buzzers, AM radios), but the snap-on grid is much easier to use. And it wisely makes it fun, fast: the second project is a very simple motor that sends a disk spinning in the air. My daughter loved it.
My only criticism is that the project book doesn't really try to explain what's going on. As a parent, if you have no background in electronics at all, you might not be able to explain what a circuit is, or why everything needs to be connected back to the battery. That won't hinder your kid's enjoyment, but it does put a damper on the educational aspect.
In terms of difficulty, if your kids can assemble one of the more-complicated Lego sets, she can follow these instructions.
Customer Review: Would recommend to everyone Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this toy for my 6 year old son who was interested in electronics. We bought one of the smaller sets because I wasn't sure if he would stay interested in it. He loved it and was immediately able to make simple circuits. In the beginning it was mostly just a toy to him but as he played with it I tried to help him read the manual and understand the science behind the toy. As he got older we also bought 2 more expansion kits and his interest was continually renewed. This makes it a great ongoing value. He's now almost 11 years old and still occasionally pulls out the set to create something. He has also advanced to making his own electrical toys and robots and wants to learn to program robots now. I attribute much of his interest in electronics to this toy. I recommend it to all my friends for any kids who show an interest in electronics.
Customer Review: Awesome With Some Supervision Summary: 5 Stars
This was a great product for my eight year old daughter. I know a lot about electricity so these simple circuits where easy for me but the way the kit was designed it made it easy for my daughter also. She would build the circuits and I would inspect them for accuracy. There are a few components that will be damaged if you reverse polarization but for the most part you cannot harm anything. I think everyone should know a little about electricity since it runs around our lives and we take it for granted. This was money well spent for a girl or a boy. My wife was thinking this was a present for me at first but then she saw how my daughter embraced it and she was a believer and starting learning from this kit as well. I think it could have taught a little more about electricity but, this will inspire new books for my daughter.
