Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits SC-300Customer Review: Girls Like 'Em Too Summary: 5 Stars
I read a bunch of reviews about how reviewer's sons like this toy. Parents, don't forget your daughters! Girls like it too! When I told a friend I was getting this for my 9 year old daughter, my friend said, "Did she ask for it?" My answer, "Well, no, she doesn't know she wants it!" How will she know if she doesn't get one?
I helped her get started to see how to follow the directions and put the pieces together in layers. From there she has been able to build stuff on her own, and learn about how electricity flows. It complements what she is learning in school about electricity. And in literature they read Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary, where the main character makes a burglar alarm for his lunch box.
Her favorite stuff to build involves the fan, which depending upon how you build it, will fly up in the air when you turn it off. A great crowd pleaser. This toy also inspired her grandfather to spend time discussing electricity with her. 300 projects should make this toy have staying power.
Customer Review: Excellent "toy" in all regards! Summary: 5 Stars
I use the term "toy" loosely. This is actually a great learning set to explore electicity and physics. Our son (almost 8) received this for Christmas and it was his favorite Christmas present. He began by following the experiments shown in the book, and worked with his dad. After he learned a few basic facts about electricity, he was off and running on his own! He began making up a lot of experiments as well, and then was excited to find the experiment suggested later in the book! I have to be honest, though, that my husband loves this as well, and I found him playing with the set long after our son was in bed! :-) One of the questions we had was what size set made the most sense. Fortunately all of the sets can be added on to, and Amazon had the cheapest prices by far, so we got our son the 300 set. This seems to be about right for him at this age because it gives him a lot of experiments he can do without overwhelming him. I suspect an older child may enjoy a set with more pieces.
Customer Review: The Hit of Christmas Day Summary: 5 Stars
My nine-year daughter really loves learning and is always asking how things work. My first attempt at getting her hooked on some science was Legos Mindstorm NXT a few years ago, but sadly she was never very interested.
I made my second attempt by getting her the SC-300 for Christmas. It was an instant smash hit from the moment we completed our first simple circuit. She spent much of her Christmas day completing project after project. She is having a blast, and learning tons about circuits as she goes. I'm having a blast recollecting my knowledge about the subject and explaining what the different components are doing.
My only regret is not buying the 500 or 750 kit so that we would have even more parts to play with. There is plenty to do in the 300, but I can see that she likes it so much that it would have been worth the extra money for the bigger kits.
Thumbs up to Elenco. What a neat, neat way to let kids learn some science. This thing is amazing.
Customer Review: Not Just for Boys! Summary: 5 Stars
I have an 8 year old daughter. This Christmas she wanted stuffed animals, Build-A-Bear, Webkinz and so on. We got her that stuff (and a giant pile of books) but I couldn't resist getting this for her, in hopes of encouraging her interest in science and technology. When it arrived I was a little concerned, the back cover has a big picture of a BOY playing with the set... No girls in sight. I was prepared for disappointment when she opened the set but she just said NEAT! And, I have to tell you, she has spent more time with the projects in this kit than ANY of her other Christmas gifts. I worked with her on the first two projects and then away she went, working her way excitedly thorough the experiments. Lights flash, wheels whiz, flying widgets soar... and my daughter is thrilled.
As I write this, she's having a play date with another little girl and the two of them are building, building, building...
Long story short -- GO FOR IT.
Customer Review: A great toy and educational too Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this on chance it would be something my 7 year old son would enjoy and play with. It comes with two instruction books with 300 experiments that increase in difficulty. My son was able to, on his own complete the first several projects in one night. They weren't too easy or too hard for him to do. At first he had some of the circuits on backwards so the light wouldn't go on or the saucer wouldn't fly but after some help from us he learned that he needed to experiment and go back over on his own, the circuitry if he wanted to get it to work. A very good toy for chilren who like to build things. He also likes Lego's and this is a bit similar.
I remember my brother doing similar projects when we were younger but they were a lot more difficult. THis company has figured out a way to make it possible for budding scientists/engineers to do these projects without the hassles of years ago electronic toys.
