Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits SC-300Customer Review: Excellent gift for the mechanically minded boy--of any age! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought Snap Circuits for my 6 year old nephew for Christmas. He has a short attention span and some learning delays. He is fascinated with tools and taking things apart and putting things together, so I thought he might enjoy Snap Circuits. He was able to open the box and immediately begin working on a circuit. He loved making a helicopter propeller launch in the air, and also being able to make police sirens. It has been great fun for our whole family. He was able to independently construct more of the circuits than I thought he would and even began understanding what was necessary for a complete circuit after just a few projects. My 10 year old nephew was able to do some of the more complicated projects completely independently and my 65 year old father also enjoyed putting them together! Every piece in the box seems constructed with boys in mind. Heavy duty plastic and snaps that stay together but that also don't stick so much that you can't pull them apart. I think this is one of the most sturdily constructed products out there for children.
Customer Review: Buy one! or two Summary: 5 Stars
Think of this as the Legos approach to wiring. We've bought two for two boys here (I'm trying to draw out the girl...) and are considering a trade-up for the boy who methodically did ALL of the experiments. I grew up with the little jumper wire and spring terminal kits which do not provide anywhere near as appealing and understandable a layout and were much harder to work with and troubleshoot. Contrariwise, is hard to improvise with the fixed shape of the components and connectors, but that's not really important for this age group. Pieces do of course get lost, but how much can you ask of the little darlings (don't flush them!!!).
One quibble, more a problem with the larger kit: I think they cheat claiming the kit supports XXX [30-750] different projects. Many projects are subtle enough variations on what came before that they don't count for much.
I'm really very pleased with these kits -- high praise from toy-jaded me -- they are a genuine improvement in learning and, more importantly, *playing* with electronics.
Customer Review: THE best toy for girls, boys, AND their daddies. Summary: 5 Stars
Son got this when he was in 1st grade (obsessed with electronics, so we gave it a try--WELL worth the expense), and he STILL loves it. He DID manage to break one of the wires they included (replacable and inexpensive) BUT even still there were TONS of things to build even without the wires. He loves it whether he's playing it alone, with sister, and/or with dad. We got him the bigger set (the SC-300) last year, as well, and it's great. It makes the whole set into a whole new toy. (the 300 set also comes with more wires, so we didn't need to replace the one he broke from the last set). highly recommended toy for 2nd grade and up. First grade was probably a bit early but he and his daddy run around the house drawing the house's electrical schematic while OTHER dads/sons are out throwing the ball...my family of weirdos just love Snap Circuits. *NOTE: Toys 'R Us DOES have a less expensive store brand of these available, but I cannot say if they are interconnectible with Snap Circuits brand.) Two thumbs AND an elbow up from my son for this toy.
Customer Review: Good fun toy with edu value Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 10 year old for Christmas on recommendation from the Amazon Toy List. At first my son was more excited about other stuff he got like video games and such. This was left under the tree for a day or two without much activity. Then an older friend came over and checked it out with my son. They loved it. They sat there for the next 3 hours straight going through all the experiments. My son doesn't generally sit still for more than 30 minutes so this was a feat in itself. He has played with it a few more times since then and appears to really enjoy it. I asked him a few questions about why the different experiments work the way they do and he really seemed to get it. This will be a great early start on his understanding of science before he gets to middle school. Be careful about the spinning helicopter part. That thing really gets going and can fly off suddenly. My son and his friend got a kick out of it, but I was a little worried someone would take a hit to the face. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, right?
Customer Review: Cool educational tool Summary: 5 Stars
There's not much I can add to the positive reviews here already. I'm very impressed with this product.
My 3 points:
1) I have a 7 year old, and obviously, it requires supervision and instruction (especially to start). The first day, we created several of the numbered projects in the booklet together. The second day, he got it out by himself and decided to build the circuit on the "DO NOT DO THIS!" page. Luckily no one and nothing got hurt. He can read, but apparently he didn't comprehend that this warning applied to HIM.
2) It would be nice if the numbered projects listed a little more information on what the "special" chips do. I'm sure it tells somewhere in the booklet, but my son was much too anxious to get started to look up those details elsewhere in the book.
3) It's imperative that the "chips" stay organized: everything must be put back in its proper spot for storage so that it can be found the next time you want to use it. This fact, alone, has made this a tremendously educational tool for my son.
