I just played with this (Snap Circuits Junior) for the first time and came looking to buy one for my kids.
In response to the person who said the manuals have errors, see the web site http://www.snapcircuits.net/ (and also http://www.elenco.com/ as mentioned below.) In particular there is a page that gives corrections to all the manuals: http://www.snapcircuits.net/updates.doc .
Another concern I had is which kit to buy: Junior, Pro, etc.? On the snapcircuits web site they have a price list for replacement parts and upgrade kits. For the difference in price between the kits you can upgrade from one to the next so this takes some of the worry about of the purchase (for me at least). http://www.snapcircuits.net/scparts.pdf

I bought this for my son when he was [...] years old. He is not any easy kid to buy toys for because he gets bored very quickly. He has spent hours playing with this toy which is truly a miracle. He has never had a problem with the parts breaking or understanding the diagrams. It is perfect for a kid this age. He has learned the basics of electronics. Anything more than this and I think it would be over his head. He knows that you must complete a circuit for it to work and if it's not working he looks for his error. My son has not told me about problems with the diagrams, but if there were any, then it would be a learning experience for him to correct the error on his own. I can't recommend this enough.Customer Review: Hours of fun!

We purchased this set for my son's ninth birthday. He is still loving it! Many of his spare moments are spent completing yet another project! He loves to show his younger siblings what he's made and is very able to do the projects on his own!
The pieces are made well and seem very durable.
I would recommend this to all parents! I have gotten to the point where I don't want to just purchase another gift for my children that will end up on the bottom of the toy box. This set is something that is teaching him responsibility, since he has to care for all of the pieces, and is something that he loves to do and is learning about simple circuits as he has fun!

I bought my son this set for his 8th birthday. He hasn't hardly put it down yet. He follows some of the instructions for a little while - then ventures off on his own. I'm not sure how much learning he'd get from just following along with the book - but since he does venture out and try to get things to work differently than the original photo - he's getting lots of learning time about what works & what doesn't, then he tries to figure out why. This is the kind of self discovery learning that will stay with him forever.
His only complaint would be that sometimes he has a hard time getting his mother to put it down long enough for him to play with it :)
Customer Review: A great toy - but much is left unexplained

This is a wonderful toy, solidly constructed and durable. I think the major barrier to an understanding of electronics is just the skill level required in assembly. This toy breaks down and eliminates that barrier. The experiment books are nice, but after assembling them and testing them one is left with the unanswered question: Why does it work? There are no explanations provided as to what is going on in the overall design of the circuit. Why is the circuit that way? Why does making the circuit that way make it do what it does? This is never explained and is a peculiar thing to be left out of an otherwise exceptional educational product for kids.
