Customer Review: A toy that is more interesting than a video game

I bought this for my very bright 9 year old boy who really loves video games. At first look at the box he just kind of shrugged and wasn't that interested, them we opened it up and started doing some of the projects. Now sometimes when he is done with his homework instead of asking to get on the computer or play with the WII, he pulls out his snap circuits instead and does a few of the projects in the book. He loves to share with his family what he has done with each project.
The other great thing about snap circuits is the learning. At first when we worked on projects and would ask him what he thought would happen or what different "alterations" to each project would do, he didn't know, now as he has worked through several projects he has his own hypothesizes about what will happen as you make changes to the projects and try different things. I can see that my kid is starting to get the basics of working with electronics and building a foundation for more learning later.

I bought this as a 7th birthday gift for my son, who is the kind of kid who wants to know how everything works. It comes with the plastic board to build circuits on, many, many circuit pieces, and three books of projects. It's been almost a month, and he is using this, and I'm not exaggerating, 3 or more hours per day -- first thing in the morning, after school, before bed... he just loves it. He quickly moved from following directions in the book to trying to modify the circuits (what if I put the speaker on instead of the fan). He's starting to ask questions about what a resistor is, and such -- thankfully, the books have clear explanations.
I give it a 4 for durability because the battery compartment cracked when it fell from the kitchen table onto a carpeted floor, then bounced onto a wood floor. It still works fine -- it was just the casing -- but kids will drop things, so I'd hoped the plastic would hold up a bit better than that.

I know it's absurd to start my review with noting that the box is very high quality, but it is designed to keep all the pieces organized, easy to see, and in nice condition. The box alone is worth $10.
We got this set plus the plug adapter, and nothing but bedtime can tear Mr. Wizard away from this.
Snap Circuits are like electrical LEGOS -- follow the schematic to build any project. Once your child gets the hang of this, the sky is the limit -- they can do multiple projects on the same circuits. This set has lights, flying saucers, recording devices, many switches, and several motors. It's a complete set -- the starter kits for Snap Circuits can all be built with this master set.
Simply excellent. Very good value -- we spent under sixty dollars and it was the hit of Christmas for our inventor.
Recommended for everybody.
Customer Review: Fantastic Toy! Worth Every Penny!

This product is so phenomenal I don't know where to start! We are a homeschooling family with 3 boys, ages 7, 8 and 10. This kit keeps them engaged and interested in learning for hours. Unlike other sets of toys, that end up in pieces all over the house, the boys take care of this set because they know if they don't they will lose it. The set is durable and the pieces fit nicely back in their respective slots after play. There is a nice range of experiments from easy to more challenging and the boys enjoy learning and working together on various projects. We bought this kit after having a smaller version many years earlier. I would recommend this set over any smaller ones, as you have so many more choices and pieces to work with. Although kind of "pricey" for a kids toy, your child will really get plenty of use from this set. Outstanding game which *grows* with your child -- as you can upgrade the kit. Projects range from simple to complex. Snapping connections is easy for the kids. Just as an example, my child quickly picked up the concepts of "switches" once he assembly the first few projects. Also helps in troubleshooting -- what is the diff bet. a open and closed circuit ?
Only "con" -- wish there was more details about the project and how does it work. Many project are variations of a "base" project. Say -- substitute bulb with the Motor.
As an enhancement it will be very cool to have small LEDs on the connections showing the flow of electricity !!
Overall a must have science kit for children ! You won't waste your money on this one !
