Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100Customer Review: Fun and educational start to electric/electronics Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 for my 7 year old grandson for Christmas. It was an instant hit. With only a little adult assistance he dove right in and started making circuits just by looking at the diagrams that are well illustrated in the accompanying instruction book. Though I wanted him to start with the easiest projects first he instead was drawn to those that created motion or sound. The product is very well made and the instructions are clear. While the product is easily mastered for his age, some adult explanations are required if the child is to gain an understanding of the electrical theory behind each experiment. Simple and fun the SC-100 should provide a stimulus for a child's further exploration of electric/electronics.
Customer Review: Good fun for the boys Summary: 5 Stars
Ordered this for Christmas for my 13 and 6 year old boys. We do the project together and then count to 3 before we turn the 2 projects on. The boys have really enjoyed putting the projects together and seeing the exciting results. I am pretty ignorant about circuitry so I am learning a bit too. As some have said this will not teach your child all about electricity but you can make some great analogies that they can understand (like the electricity being a river, switches being dams, resistors being like weirs, etc).
Note - I thought the light sensor was not working properly to change the alarm sounds but found I just needed it closer to bright light. Keep this in mind if you have this issue.
No problems! would highly recommend.
Customer Review: Great way to teach kids without them knowing it! Summary: 5 Stars
I was very impressed with this kit. The projects are REALLY easy to put together (no soldering; just snap pieces in place) and the manual explains what you are building and how it works. I bought this for my 10 year old son, but my 7 year old is the one that loves to use it. I let him build the projects himself, but I don't let him connect the battery until I check over the circuit just in case he created a short. The kit allows for creative thinking as well. For example, in one project, the audio was too loud. I suggested to my kid that he put a resistor (provided with kit) in-line with the speaker. He was thrilled when it worked. This is a wonderful way to teach kids about electronics. It's very reasonably priced as well (compared to Radio Shack kits).
Customer Review: Great Educational Tool for Teaching Electricity Summary: 5 Stars
I teach using this toy in an after-school program. I find that it is a well constructed kit that systematically can teach concepts related to electricity and electronics. The kit comes with a project book complete with diagrams for building the various types of circuits. The book describes the purpose of each project next to each diagram. While, this book is great, even better, you can purchase from Elenco - the manufacturer - a curriculum for using this in the classroom in four distinct lessons that provide enough material for a six-week class. Some resellers should also have the student guide available. For longer classes, use the larger Elenco kits. They have a whole program designed to add more content with each upgrade. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: great for budding engineers Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this for my son (almost six years old) and he loves it. The directions are simple enough that he can do the projects on his own. I did the first dozen or so with him, but after that he didn't need my help. I'll probably get the bigger sets for him when he's older.
This toy is educational, though I think at his age most of "why this works" is over his head.
The kit is very user-friendly and seems durable. The projects are somewhat repetitive. 100 projects are in the book but really there are just many variations on the theme. Even so, this is a great starter kit. It says ages 8 and up, but my five year-old handled it well. If your child is older, I would perhaps recommend a larger kit with more projects.
