Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100Customer Review: An excellent introduction to Electronics. Summary: 5 Stars
The best point in favour of this product is that it is lego style toy that does not intimidate a child with intricate electronic components. My 6-1/2 year old daughter started playing with it and was very excited to have completed her first project to light a bulb with a switch. Theories of electricity followed naturally when initially the bulb did not lightup. I showed her the shiny metal strip beneath the connectors and explained conductivity a little.Another major advantage is that there are mostly no wires, and the components are hidden from view, giving it a very un-complicated look that a child can easily comprehend. This difference makes possible for my daughter to actually play with it. The only problem seems to be the quality of plastic used. It looks as if it might break if a component was bent while snapping in. Still, I highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: A teaching tool that's also fun! Summary: 5 Stars
Our grandson was turning 7 and we bought this for his birthday. The instructions state 8 years old and up, but my husband's specialty is electronics so he helped him with several experiments and taught him how to understand the schematics. By the third day our grandson got up in the morning and was creating new and different experiments. He became more technically advanced at troubleshooting if something did not work and became equally satisfied with conquering any problems. If you can help a child learn how to read and understand the instructions, you will be amazed at how much they will enjoy this toy. I stated it was durable because the parts felt solid, however, it has only been two weeks so I really don't know if it will last months or years. I Highly recommend this toy as a sometime alternative to video games when you are looking for indoor activities.
Customer Review: Good for 9-yr old Summary: 5 Stars
This project teaches about electricity in a fun way. My 9-yr old daughter was studying energy in her science class. She was learning about electrical circuits and wanted to build her own circuits, instead of just drawing them. We found this kit on Amazon and it's a good complement to her classes. There are series and parallel circuit experiments that teach concepts, as well as projects that are just plain fun.
The kit is well made with directions that are easy to follow. The pieces snap to a base board and to each other. They are a comfortable size to handle and clearly marked. The parts seem robust enough after a week of use, I suspect they will last a long time. The directions are clear for a year 9-yr old to follow by herself. The kit is flexible enough that she can build her own circuits, adapted from the specific projects.
Customer Review: My son got 2 of these for Christmas Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my 7 year old son for Christmas because I needed one more toy for him. On Christmas morning, there was great confusion over this gift until we realized that my father-in-law had purchased the identical set for my son. After a couple of hours of playing with the video games that he had asked for, my son opened one of these sets. We had every intention of returning the other one. But after several hours of watching him play, my 11 and 13 year old daughters asked permission to open the other set. Neither set has been put away yet! At least one child plays with them every single day. All three are fascinated with how they work and what they can make happen. An educational toy that entertains a 7 year old boy, an 11 year old girl, and a 13 year old girl can't be beat! We'll be ordering the add-on kits very soon!
Customer Review: totally safe and totally fun learning toy Summary: 5 Stars
My 6 year old son LOVES this kit! He showed everyone in the family how to do the experiments soon after getting it for Christmas. The manual that accompanies the kit is very thorough: it explains the function of each piece and contains very good instructions for over 50 experiments.
The pieces actually have snaps on them (like clothing snaps) and each piece can fit to another to make part of a circuit. The battery case requires 2 AA batteries (not included), so very little current is generated, and the batteries never heat up (unlike other electronics kits we've tried).
Another good quality of this kit is that kids can add to it by getting Elenco's Snap Circuits 300 and 500 piece kits after they master this kit.
If your child is at all interested in electronics, get this kit for him/her!
