Toys and Games Reviews of Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100Customer Review: I'd give this 10 stars if I could! Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of the things that my 6 yr old asked for as a Christmas present and he got it. He absolutely LOVES it!! I showed him how to make a project and follow the diagrams once, and he took it from there. He was able to make one project after another on his own and he's so proud of himself when it works like it should. He was especially impressed by the water alarm project...I thought it was really neat too. My son usually likes a toy for a short time, and gets bored with it, but he has played with this every day since Christmas and for several hours at a time. He also got another electronic experiment set that he asked for, that is not affiliated with Snap Circuits, and it just doesn't compare. I found myself putting together those projects for him because they were too complicated and the parts didn't go together easily. The Snap Circuits were so much better in so many ways. I highly recommend this toy! I plan on purchasing another set for his birthday.
Customer Review: How can something that is so much fun still be educational? Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 6-year old neighbor. Even as I gave it to him, I thought, "He's gonna hate it!" Even he thought he would hate it and he told me so! Well, then we started playing. I helped with the first of the 101 experiments which are all very clearly described in the kit. Once we finished the first experiment, he was done with me and off on his own.
I cannot recommend this kit highly enough. My young friend loves it. He isn't crazy about reading, but he can easily understand the diagrams in the experiment booklet. To see his face light up when he first wired up a doorbell all my himself was a wondrous thing.
Although the toy is recommended for children ages 8 to 108, I do think first graders can enjoy it after some gentle guidance from an adult.
I'll be purchasing the more advanced version for my young neighbor long before his next birthday. This is one fun AND educational toy!
Customer Review: Challenging and Intriguing Fun Summary: 5 Stars
My son is 10 and has severe ADHD. Most things we get him capture his attention for only a few days then they end up in his closet - the 'black hole' of the toy world. He loves this circuit board and can't wait to "play" with it when he gets home from school. The booklet diagrams are a bit confusing at first, but once you get the basic idea of how electricity flows, they make more sense. The great thing about this kit though, is that you are not limited to only the circuits shown in the diagram. You can also create your own "inventions" as you become more familiar with how electricity follows a circuit. My husband and I also like to play with the circuits as well. It is a great interactive, hands-on activity that we can share with him and it is a wonderful alternative to video games. This board would be equally challenging to older kids too as well as a great way to learn about electronics engineering.
Customer Review: Not a Toy Summary: 3 Stars
A great EDUCATIONAL kit, but not really a toy. It took a little one on one time with my son (8yrs) to get him going on this himself. He's proud of all the projects that he is able to complete. But it would have been helpful to know before hand that this set makes several different types of loud, IRRITATING noise. This kit does not seem to have the lasting entertainment value that other bulding toys have--my son likes to check off each project he has completed, and as he has completed most now (3 weeks after Christmas) the set is seldom played with. Experimentation with the kit is a little nervewracking for him as shortcircuiting the set could potentially ruin some of the components. His twin received the Snap Rover set with the idea that the two sets could combine for more creative fun. That hasn't happened.
I wish I'd bought this set for homeschooling purposes, not as a Christmas gift.
Customer Review: definitely better than most "lab kits" Summary: 5 Stars
My son got this kit for his 10th birthday six months ago. Both of his folks are electricians, so he naturally has a lot of curiosity. It's seen hours of use, by a bunch of boys ages 8 to 10. On the down side, one of the pegs on the board has snapped off (doesn't affect performance), and the speaker has been a bit troublesome (sometimes loud enough, sometimes too quiet).
On the up side, the issues have been minor, and the pieces are surprisingly durable. The kids are learning to troubleshoot their work, checking for loose connections and misplaced devices. The "blueprints" for each of the circuits are very clear. The snap-together, modular design is far less cumbersome for young hands than any of the other lab kits I've seen. There's a surprising variety of components in this small kit, and enough circuit plans to keep the boys entertained for hours at a time.
