Toys and Games Reviews of Educational Insights Washing MachineCustomer Review: An affordable and fun washer toy. Summary: 5 Stars
I'd been looking for a washer/dryer toy for my 4-year old for about a year. Living in Alaska, we are limited often to what we can get delivered here so the bigger ones that were included in kitchen sets just weren't an option for us. My son loves machines and gadgets though, especially washing machines/dryers and kept asking for his own. We couldn't even find anyone who had made a sturdy cardboard one (there were plans for a stacked one we could have bought but it looked like something our son would consider a climbing challenge and we doubted it would be safe for him).
So we were thrilled when I discovered this one! At the time, it was the only single one I could find that I could afford and get shipped here. After reading the reviews though it seemed like it would be perfect for our son. I had read about how the door can break off but for the price it seemed worth taking the risk. It was supposed to be a Christmas gift, but we couldn't wait to give it to him so he got it early.
To say he was excited would be an understatement! Before he could take it out of the box we explained that he had to be careful with the door or it would break. Then while playing with it over the next few days we kept reminding him to be gentle with the door. For such an active, bounce-off-the-walls child he did really well. A couple weeks after he got it, the door did accidently come off, but it easily snapped back into place. It did make the danger of it breaking more real to him and now he is always careful when opening and closing it. He loves it so much he doesn't want to lose it!
Honestly, I'd say that as long as the child doesn't lean down on the door while it is open, it shouldn't break or come off. It is more durable then I'd thought it would be from other reviews. It was a bit smaller then I'd thought it'd be but that was my failure to read the dimensions and actually think about what size it would be. Watching my son play with it, I am glad it is the size it is. He can pick it up and carry it from room to room (though he is very careful now not to drop it because that is how the door came off for him) but it is still big enough that he can 'wash' wash clothes and doll clothes and such. I like that it is small enough I can tuck it onto a shelf and out of the way when not in use.
It does not use water, like some other Educational Insights toys do. The water is encases in the 'glass' of the door and so there is always a little water viewable. For that reason my son won't believe it is a dryer but the spin button could easily be a 'dryer' for a child who isn't such a stickler for details. It automatically shuts off after a bit so saves batteries but a child needs to learn to hit to power button first before a 'wash' or 'dry' (until my son learned this he kept thinking it was broken). There are 5 buttons on the front: power, water fill, wash(intermittent spinning), dry(continuous spin), and a complete cycle(does all three).
There is a small pull out drawer that I'm not sure if it is supposed to be for coins or pretend fabric softener. We told our son it was for the coins or barrettes you find in pants pockets and such. The 'drum' inside can turn both ways for a child to manually turn it. The sounds are pretty realistic and it even buzzes after the 'dryer' cycle. The volume can't be adjusted and I find it a bit loud (but then, so is my real washer!) but some tape or a colorful sticker over the speaker vent can lower the volume. If your child doesn't like loud noises you might want to check the volume yourself and cover it if needed before giving to your child.
I would recommend this toy to other parents if their children are into household machines/gadgets and the like. Keep in mind that a young child might have a harder time playing gently with it. That said though, I wouldn't call my son very careful with his toys, he's probably somewhere in the middle(now) between rough and careful. He's done well with it except for the one time the door came off (but was easily put back on) but as I stated earlier, the door probably couldn't take too much really rough play without breaking. For children that like to pretend play it should be a hit!
For the price, it is a good, fun toy.
