Toys and Games Reviews of Educational Insights MathShark

Customer Review: Does the trick
Summary: 3 Stars

This met the needs of 3 kids as they went through early grade school.

Pluses: It does have a range of levels for each function. It's lasted three years.

Minuses: LCD is hard to read - not enough contrast. Needs an optional back light. Buttons are 'squishy' and processor is slow - the kids can type faster than the machine can process.

Overall, somewhat entertaining for the kids. They still felt it was a chore to go through the repetitive drills of their own volition, but not so bad that they wouldn't do it when asked. While it's not super-durable, it will last if cared for.

Customer Review: great math tutor
Summary: 4 Stars

this product was recommended by my child's 2nd grade math tutor to help him with his math. he has had over 6 months and still in perfect condition and that is alot to say because my child or 2yo brother destroys most of their toys. has addition, subtraction, multiplication and division which will be of help throughout elementary school. though screen is small and gray and numbers are in black need good lighting when practicing with it. also, for all those new parents or small children starting math teach your child math fact families if child learns that mostly likely to struggle less with math.

Customer Review: Great idea; lousy quality
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this game to help my 8 year old increase her recall speed in math (addition, subtraction and multiplication). Loved the idea that this would grow with her and challenge her at different levels. When the product arrived we were not able to turn it on, even after trying several sets of batteries. Set it back for an exchange and the second one turned on, but stopped working after two uses. Sent it back again, and was told by Amazon that the product is being pulled from their distribution because of poor quality and other similar complaints. Needless to say I am very disappointed.

Customer Review: Great learning toy
Summary: 5 Stars

My kids love this toy. Shhhhh do NOT tell them learning is happening. We recieved this at our annual homeschooling swap several years ago and our model (purple and blue) is still going strong. The shape is great and easy to hold for kids. My kids love anything electronic and this 'toy' makes them feel like they are using a nintendo when in actuality they are doing schoolwork! Definately a huge hit with mom and the kids. When we are done it will be passed to another family without doubt. I do wish the Mathshark had a headphone port or volume control(maybe the newer models do?)

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 4 Stars

This works like advertised. It does a good job of drilling a wide variety of the basic math facts. It has a very wide range of ages that it would be useful for. I did have some issue with the screen seeming a little difficult to get the clearest image on but my daughter (who uses it) says she has no problems. We made a chart for each number and when she can get the addition or subtraction set done within a certain time frame, she can cross it off and stop practicing it. We found this motivated her greatly to practice on her own to get her times down. On to multiplication/division!
