Customer Review: The once great toy now cheaply made!

When I was a kid, I had a lot of fun with my Duncan Butterfly yo-yo, so I bought one for my daughter. It's Christmas morning, she opened it a short while ago, and it does not function properly. I tried it (and I used to be pretty good with a yo-yo)and on the first throw it did not recoil back up. I tried a very simple trick to rewind the yoyo and resume and that didn't work. Some other basic tricks also did not work well. I was a little surprised as a yoyo is not a complicated thing so I looked a little closer at it and here is my opinion:
What they are calling the "original" Butterfly is not manufactured as the original butterfly was, thus it does not work the same. Instead, from what I can tell and from what I remember, they have changed its manufacturing to reduce cost, eliminate the quality, and reduce its ease of use for kids. Now, it is no better than the cheap knock-off yoyo that never worked as good as a Duncan once did. The only thing "original" about this toy is the name. Apparently, they have engineered some of the cost out of its manufacturing, but at the same time eliminated what separated it from all the other cheap yoyos...the fun. Now this once great "toy" is no more fun than a rock tied to a string. I'm going to return this piece of junk and seek out a yoyo that is made well and works as well as the Duncan brand once did. Pretty disappointing, but seems to be the trend these days.

My daughter (16) received a low quality Yo-Yo as a gift and started to do fairly well with it. It was clear from the start that Yo-Yo was not so well balanced and was not one that she would be able to to use to do a lot of tricks. She bought two Duncan Yo-Yo's, this one, the Butterfly, and the Imperial Yo-yo.
This Yo-Yo made a big difference from the cheaper one she had right away. Even my wife and I were able to do basic tricks with the Duncan Yo-Yos and my daughter is able to do some fairly cool things with it.
This is a great low tech toy (no batteries required) that can still entertain kids. It has "passed the test of time".

This yo-yo was almost perfect except for the fact that winding the string up was difficult. The knot around the base of the yo-yo isn't tight enough so I was constantly asked by my sister [8 yrs old] to wind it up because it just kept spinning on her, and even I had trouble winding it without making some random technique work. The string is also extremely long. My sister had to hold it above her head [she's over 4 feet], and I, at 5'2", had to hold it shoulder length or higher for it not to hit the ground when I tried to show her some old school tricks. Overall, everything else about the yo-yo is good, pretty basic. Hopefully it was just the one we got that didn't have the tight knot...Customer Review: Let's go back to basics

There are a lot of different kind of toys in the market at this time. Electronic and robotic toys seem to have all the attention of our kids, and I think it's ok, I don't have anything against toys from the future. But let's go back to basics... Toys like yo-yo's that don't require batteries are so much fun, and reminds us that fun shouldn't be so complicated or expensive.
Let's teach our children to have fun without complicating their life, and they will definitely live a better uncomplicated life in their future.

I would highly recommend either this yoyo or the Duncan Imperial for beginning yoyo-ers. They're the classic Duncan design that's easy to handle so you can get the feel of yoyoing and a few basic tricks. A wonderful gift for young kids or adults who remember the joy of a simple toy. Also a fun gift for yourself! I keep mine on my desk for when I need a break for a few minutes!
