Toys and Games Reviews of Doctor Who Sonic ScrewdriverCustomer Review: Sonic screwdriver and psychic paper Summary: 3 Stars
My son, a big Doctor Who fan, begged me for a sonic screwdriver. I saw several offered on the Internet, and I chose this one as being midpriced, with the added bonus of including the Doctor's psychic paper. When it arrived, I saw it was a little flimsier than had at first appeared--it's mostly one solid piece of plastic with a few moving parts. Buttons are painted on, rather than being separate pieces that can be pressed. Still, my kids had fun pointing it at things, pushing the one working button and seeing the end light up blue and the hearing the "Whrr-whrr-whrr" sound it makes. The psychic paper is just a sheet of vinyl that you write on with a fluorescent pen, and then it luminesces when you shine the sonic screwdriver on it. Kind of cool, but not what psychic paper is actually supposed to do. I guess the beauty of psychic paper on the show is that it's always just a blank sheet of paper--no special effects necessary.
Customer Review: Great for writing and stabbing bad guys in the eye Summary: 5 Stars
I love Doctor Who, so of course I had to buy this. It's durable, I found this out when I got into a fight with my neighbor, who's a jerk, and I pulled my Sonic Screwdriver out and stabbed him in the eye. I also used it to sign my name on the police report and fill out my personal information. Then I used the invisible ink to go over to my neighbors house and write, eh, let's not repeat the naughty thing I wrote on his car. Anyway, for kids who want to reenact their favorite episodes or teens like me who just need an instant access weapon/pen, it's great. I also like the fact that I've had this for nearly a year now, and neither of the ink stubs, black and invisible, have run out yet. I'd also like to mention that the "static noise" and blue light it makes, is fun to do around old people, they think their heart monitors have gone out or something.
Customer Review: This is more a prop than a toy...... Summary: 5 Stars
..... and now I know why the producers of the current Doctor Who Series decided to use this in the adventures of the 10th doctor.
The story goes that the producers of Doctor who were so impressed with the ruggedness and authenticity of this Sonic screwdriver "toy", that they decided to use it on the show as the actual prop for David Tennant, instead of the sonic screwdriver the prop department made for the series originally.
The craftsmanship and quality shows in this toy, and yes, as some have said here, it can be broken, but ONLY IF YOU LEAVE IT THE "EXTENDED" POSITION IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE (LIKE A PURSE)...
Other than that, this thing is one of the best prop/toys I have seen in years.
And hey, if its good enough to actually use on the TV show, then it should be very OK for the fans.
Customer Review: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver WOW! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great item and no self-respecting Dr. Who fan could be without one. This item is a bit larger than the TV show prop, and the color of the barrell is not quite right but the toy looks great. This item has a blue light that reveals invisable ink from the pen,( a really cool feature). The sound effects could be a bit louder and although there is two different sounds, they sound alot alike and it is hard to tell the difference between them. As far as Doctor Who toys go this is a great piece. The demand for this item is very high. The Mfg did not expect this high demand and is finding it hard to keep the shelves stocked. I have seen these for a much higher price so grab one while you can. You never know when you may lock yourself in a closet and need to get out. Remember my other car is a " BIG BLUE BOX"
Customer Review: Fun Noise Maker :) Summary: 4 Stars
I needed to treat my geeky fangirl side, so I got one of these to annoy people with. :) I've been very happy with it. I had minor difficulties putting the batteries in because of the odd design, but once I figured it out everything was great. It feels sturdy enough to me, I haven't experienced it to be overly fragile like some but I keep it up on top of my bookshelf most of the time when I'm not using it, so who knows. All I know is that it's served me perfectly since I got it months back.
One thing of note: when I received it the UV pen nib was defective, I had to contact the manufacturer for a replacement via e-mail. They were courteous and didn't even ask for proof that I had bought it, they just asked for an address to ship a replacement to and it was done. Definite plus.
