Customer Review: Cheap Wood Box, Poor Quality Art Pieces

When you hear your child tell you that Santa's elves did a poor job making a Christmas present, then you know you've got a problem. I ordered this art set for my aspiring young artist, hoping that this impressive looking art set would both encourage his artistic dreams and would provide him with an organized "station" for all of his art utensils and equipment. Tragically, this item is not that product.
For starters, the silly wood box is poorly constructed, and the flimsy plastic interior hardly holds the art supplies in place. On day 1 of use, the poorly attached ribbon strings (used for pulling the trays out of the wood box) simply broke off from the trays. So, now, in order to dig out the trays from the wood box, you have bend the flimsy plastic (easy enough to do because, again, the plastic is very thin and flimsy) in order to lift the tray from the wood box. In the meantime, most of the art pieces pop out of the plastic because your efforts to lift it from the box have deformed the plastic. Joy.
Next, as you lift the tray out of the box, there are small folding/bending hinges that hold the trays in place...or at least they should. They, however, are so flimsy that they won't hold the tray in place, so it constantly falls back into the box. For the record, the picture for this item depicts the box standing up on its side with the two trays extended out. Good luck making your art set stand up without every piece in the tray (or in the box) from falling out and on to your work surface! I tried setting it up like this just one time. After picking up about 100 of t he 174 pieces from the table, I decided that we won't be trying this method of displaying the art set again. So, we open the art set and lay it flat on a table, then gently try to open the trays up and out of the box. Unfortunately, the hinges that are attached between the trays and the box are pretty weak and can't hold the tray up adequately. So, we prop up the trays by putting something under the trays in order to keep them up when little fingers dig in for art supplies.
As for the supplies, I wish I could say that they were so wonderful that it makes the aforementioned suffering worth it. The oil pastels are barely better than crayons, and the paints aren't much better. The pencils included in the set might be the best stuff, but given the suffering explained with other parts of this set I would suggest going to your local art store and buying the pieces you need/want as opposed to much of the stuff included in this set. For instance, there are about 6 or 7 red oil pastels, and they are all the same color as opposed to varying shades of red. Very disappointing for the money.
While I know everything these days comes from China with love, this set is poorly made, contains inferior art pieces that even my little artist isn't compelled to use over his Crayola art set, and fails to live up to the favorable reviews contained on Amazon for this product (which is what persuaded me to buy it in the first place). I should have appreciated the fact that most of the positive reviews for this product came from people who gave it as a gift to others. Therefore, they weren't around long enough to see the art set break down after short use. I'm sure if these reviewers went back and chatted with the recipient of the art set, they would likely learn that the set is no longer usable or has broken in some form.
So, for now, all I can do is reassure my little ones that even Santa and his elves make mistakes when it comes to the construction of Christmas gifts.
