Customer Review: POS not TOS

I've just received my new communicator and it's hard to believe that it's made by the same people who produce the outstanding TOS phaser and action figures. First of all, it's about the size of an old Magnavox TV remote control from the 60's. Not the streamlined, almost palm sized version from the show. With today's technology, couldn't this have been done right at least? It feels flimsy, OK it's a plastic toy. The antenna grid/lid swings almost freely. Tilt it and it opens. I pull out the plastic tab thingy sticking out the side because I know that's what you do to get electronic gizmos to do their thing. Press the first button, nothing happens. Press the second and it says the same thing over and over. Read the instructions and it says that after the plastic tab is pulled out and you press the first button it will, indeed do it's thing. That does not happen. I keep the button depressed for 5, 10, 20, 25 seconds and still nothing happens. I repeat several times. And nothing happens each time. "Maybe a piece of the plastic tab is still stuck inside", I think. "Maybe the batteries are depleted". Ahhh, depleted batteries. OH JOY! Let me get the screwdrivers. These Trek things are designed to FORCE you to get screwdrivers so you can open them up and flick little switches in order to make them function properly. And who amongst us doesn't love that? I ask. OK, I fished out the screwdrivers and attempt to take out the screws so I can see what's wrong. But the screws will not budge. No, they don't nudge. And try as I might, I'm just stripping the heads as I attempt to move them. So I gave up. Now my new Star Trek communicator takes it's place on the Shelf of Shame next to my equally chintzy Tricorder. A review for another time.
Now, I'm a grown up and had no intentions of running around my place pretending to be Capt. Kirk or renacting my favorite scenes from the show. I just wanted a reasonable facsimilie of something that I've wanted since I was a kid. I still don't have one. As that great engineer Lt. Cmdr. Montgomert Scott once said, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice , shame on me." Aye laddie, I've been fooled twice, and won't be wasting my money on junk like this again.
