I bought these fingerpaints before reading the reviews of them, and I'm really glad I did. Yes, they are a bit different from the fingerpaints you remember from your childhood, but in this case, that's not so bad.
These paints can be used with plain old paper (but make sure it's fairly thick - we use cardstock); you don't need to buy special fingerpainting paper, wet it down, and put newspaper under it. Hence, set up and clean up are both far quicker and easier than with traditional fingerpaints.
The colors are beautiful. Yes, a bit translucent and gel-like, but beautiful. We have not had a problem mixing them like other reviewers have had - red and blue DO make purple for us. My toddler especially enjoys plopping different colors on a sheet of paper and then folding the paper in half, making inkblot-esque abstractions. These paints seem particularly well-suited to this, as they blend well, stick to the paper, and generally don't ooze out the center fold. Because of the unique consistency of the paint, the abstract shapes end up with thicker veins of color running through them, which is a nice touch. Try it! No, you probably won't be able to create a serious masterpiece with this paint, as one reviewer lamented, but this is fingerpaint here, kids - it's supposed to be a fun introduction to the artistic process, not the foundation for an art school portfolio.
Clean up is very simple with these paints. They have come off of skin, clothes, hair, furniture, and bathroom fixtures just fine for us, but we've never let them sit for too long.
In short, as long as you don't need your child's fingerpaints to be just like yours were, these are great. I really, really wish they smelled like the old ones, though, but, unfortunately, they are cruelly unscented. I recommend giving them a chance - Crayola rarely disappoints, and you don't have much to lose.
