Toys and Games Reviews of Crayola Beginnings Color Me A SongCustomer Review: Okay, but needs improvements Summary: 3 Stars
My 20 month old just got this from the grandparents. She loves to color, and I wasn't worried at all about the 4 month disparity between her age and the suggested age rating. She took to coloring on it right away, of course, but didn't seem very phased by the music. She pushed the instrument buttons a few times, but wasn't impressed, and I'm quite sure she didn't get the correlation between her coloring and the tempo.
Pros:
- I really like having the drawer on the side for the crayons. This will help both to teach her to put them away while at home, and make it convenient to have something to travel with for coloring. Other reviewers mentioned having problems with it functioning well, but ours is just fine. My daughter can even open and close it pretty easy without frustration.
- Volume control and off switch. Thank goodness for this. I might not have opened it otherwise. We generally stray from too many toys that make noise. A few are fine, but every single thing you buy a child does not need to take batteries, light up, and make noises. The 2 volume levels are a nice option, and there's nothing wrong with just turning it off and having a nice stable, portable drawing space.
- Triangular crayons. We already had a set of these, so now we have extra, and I will tout them here. As someone else said, it's great that they don't roll off of tables. I also think it's easier for little hands to hold them. They are slightly chunky, which makes them more durable than the regular skinny crayons.
Cons:
- The whole faster-you-draw-faster-the-music-plays thing is kind of pointless and stupid. My daughter doesn't get it, and I don't expect her too. Honestly, unless you are completely aware that the toy is doing this and really paying attention to hear it, you probably won't notice. And it's worse when you pile all the instruments on top of one another.
- The 'paper holders' are shoddy. It might work better if they were on all 4 sides of the paper, but they're only on 3 sides, and not very effective at that. So, unless you are being careful, there's not much point to them, and that can be very frustrating for kids just wanting to color and not understanding.
- Overall, it looks pretty cheap to me, especially for a Crayola product.
Again, it's alright, and if nothing else, we can use it as a travel drawing board. I would not have spent my own money on this.
