Fans of the Doctor Who story Human Nature/The Family of Blood will want to own this scaled-down replica of the Journal of Impossible Things, temporary-human teacher John Smith's fascinating dream diary. It's all here, as seen in the episode: the (fake) leather cover, the semi-legible text and sketches of people and creatures from the Doctor's life, designed by Kellyanne Walker from text by Paul Cornell. Smith's confused writings, full of misspellings and repeated phrases, make for a fascinating document, providing an extra layer of insight into the character. So do the many drawings, including the first images of the first eight Doctors ever seen in the revived series. Although the book is far from thick, there are more pages to be seen in this toy replica than were shown on screen. This toy replica lets fans to pore over the Journal at their leisure, without single-framing their way through the episode on video.
My main objection to the Journal as a product is that it's only about two-thirds the size of the original, and not printed as dark as it might be. A full size reprint of John Smith's hurried scribblings in black ink would be difficult to read; a reduced version in sepia ink on cream-colored paper just makes it worse. Nor have I much use for the mini sonic screwdriver that comes with it, having already bought one of the full-size models. I dropped one of the batteries for this one the day I got it, and have never yet managed to find it again. Drat.
Still, despite its faults, this is a very cool thing to have. It rewards careful and repeated examination, and I'm glad I bought it. And here's a spoiler for you: the Journal will be mentioned again on he show before the year is out.
