This is such a cute toy! Sure, the plastic isn't of the highest quality, but children enjoy the set and the original retail price is very reasonable. The funhouse, which is really the base for the entire Zhu Zhu world, consists of two circular rooms and a "hallway" (or tunnel) which connects them. The tunnel has grooves on it that cause the hamster to make various sounds... doorbell/knocking sounds for the bedroom and splashing/gurgling sounds for the bathroom. The floor is printed with images of blankets, hamster food, a sink, and other such essentials. Our little one loves to pretend that she is giving the hamster a bath or tucking it into bed.
The little hamster that comes with the set, Patches, is very sweet and cuddly. She FLEW across our hardwood floor once we changed the batteries, so keep in mind that the original batteries are really for store use only, and don't be alarmed if your hamster seems a little sluggish; a new set of batteries will perk it right up. You really only need one hamster to enjoy the set, but it's hysterical to put in two or more at the same time - they'll bounce off of each other and chatter together. Best of all, a simple press to the hamster's back turns it off. Try that with a real pet!

I think this is a great little toy. Its like having a pet without the mess! Luckily I bought up as much as I could in stores like Walmart and Target. I did not get lucky at TRU. Now they all put a limit on how much we can buy. I will divey these out to my nieces, nephews and my own small children. Whatever I have left over, I will sell to a friend for exactly the price I bought it for just to help them out. This is not really about a toy. This is about a global economic crisis. The whole world industry is corrupt but the consumer still has a choice. Keep looking, keep shopping. Stay away from Amazon and ebay and buy it all up in the stores and help others out. Its a small way to fight back, but if so many people want these things like the industry says they do, it should be enough to make a dent. Otherwise, if you don't get lucky or just cannot join the consumer battle, thats okay too. Your child will understand if they don't get one. I've disappointed my children many times but deep down they know no one loves them more than their Dad and I. If they are too young to read, even better. Yes, the pieces don't stay together very well, and yes, I have to keep putting them back together. But that hasn't diminished how much fun my kids have had with this set. Bought it for our 6 year old daughter (along with a 3-hamster pack), who didn't know anything about these before getting it, and as soon as she realized that the hamsters ran around in the playset as well as all around the floor, she was mesmerized. Suddenly, our 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl were playing with them as well - all three kids were in the hallway on Christmas day setting up a maze for the hamsters. The next day, our 2 year old got her hands on one and wouldn't put it down. Now my 6 year old (who originally got it as a present) has her own hamster bag to carry them around in. She loves them. So, despite some of the flaws, the kids have the final say on how much fun the toy is, and they clearly like it very much (and I fortunately paid retail!)Customer Review: Poison

higher-than-allowed levels of the chemical antimony were found in the toy. Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters one of the top-selling toys with low ratings after finding antimony, which can cause health problems.
Antimony was measured at 93 parts per million in the hamster's fur and at 106 parts per million in its nose. Both readings exceed the allowable level of 60 parts per million, said O'Rourke, an associate professor of environmental science at the University of California, Berkeley.
O'Rourke said GoodGuide's test results, released Friday, also indicated the possibility that some toys contained phthalates, chemicals that were subject to tougher standards in the Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act passed last year.

Customer Review: My Kids LOVE Their Zhu Zhu Pets

We were lucky enough to be chosen to do a product review of Zhu Zhu Pets. We received several components of the habitat plus one hamster. It took a little time to figure out exactly how the components of the habitat fit together, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to add another part to the hamster's playground. Each hamster has its own personality. The hamsters roam around their habitat (or loose through my house) by themselves. The kids can't keep their hands off of them, but that's OK, too, because the hamsters won't bite back when you pull their tails. Ha ha. I think the car is the best accessory. The hamster really goes into the car and drives it out of the garage. Too cute. It's nowhere near a real hamster, but it's a fun toy. Of course, there's no mess to clean up, either, parents. [...]
