Customer Review: Prior Slot Car Experience Helpful/Required!

As you can tell, this product has mixed reviews. The instructions are indeed very limited in detail, so knowing how to set up a slot car set already is beneficial. Also, there is no info on how to "tune" the cars, which is critical to keeping them in the slot. NOT a toy for young (under 6) kids unless they are supervised. The biggest single adjustment that MUST be made is spreading the contact wires and flattening them so they are parallel to the contact rails. The tips of the wires must also be bent towards the car and not bent down. When the cars are placed on the track, the front wheels must touch the track. If you can push the front end down, it is not adjusted correctly. Once you have them adjusted, the cars will stay in, although you still have to "drive" the cars (fast in the straights, slow in the curves). These cars have limited magnetic downforce. Finally, if you are racing on carpet, recheck the pickup wires after every crash, because they will get caught in the carpet and get pulled out away from the car. Remember... the front wheels MUST touch the track or the cars will come out.

I don't know exactly what Carrera had in mind when it designed this product for kids. The biggest problem that I see is that the cars go so fast they always run off the track. As other people have mentioned, you have to be very careful when pushing down on the button to race the car otherwise you will slide off the track every time you race. Also, if the brushes on the bottom of the car are slightly bent down you won't even make it past the cross over part of the track.
The speed controllers also should have made the controller less powerful or the cars slower, because it's very, very frustrating to race and not be able to finish one lap.
I hope they make a better product with kids in mind, not their wallets.
This set is for teenagers (not 8 year olds) who can control the speed very well, and don't even get me started about the trigger button. What is that all about? The trigger is supposed to give you a boost of power, but unless you have 10 feet or more of straight track you definitely won't be needing it.

This race set is fantastic!
It went together easily and looked great all set up. The response between the controllers and the cars was smooth. The cars take a little throttle feathering practice to keep them from flying off the track, but once you play with it for a bit it's no problem.
The first day we had it my little girl was running the car back and forth over the lap counter and broke the pin off the bottom of the " Chick Hicks" car, so we replaced that part of the track with just a regular piece of track and Gorilla Super Glue bonded the pin back onto the car and it works fine.
A word of warning though if you have cats: they love to watch the cars go round and sometimes chase them and this will make your children extremely amused. But seriously the cats also chew on the flag poles and bite off the tips of the plastic fences. If you have this on the floor be aware that your cats might choke on these pieces
Great first race car set for kids. Small and big. It took me back to the race set I had when I was that age. Lots of Fun!!
Customer Review: Here Is How to Get The Cars To Work

This car set is ok. The directions are terrible for it only being 25 pieces of track to put together. I assembled it for my 6 year old son and it took me about an hour and a half to assemble it and get the cars to work properly.
HERE IS THE TRICK TO GET THE CARS TO WORK: On the bottom of the cars there are 2 pieces of braided metal rope that hangs down onto the track. They are bent into a "U" shape toward the front and back of the car. I used wire cutters and cut the front of the "U" shape. After that extra was removed the cars stayed on the track and actually kept moving. I did this to both cars.
The car track seems to keep coming loose too pretty easy. There are little clips that hold the pieces of track together and work ok, but not great.
When the track was put together the cars would stay on for about 2-3 laps with my 4 and 6 year old kids playing with it. I would be able to keep the cars on the track much better. Overall it is an ok set, I would have bought again, but not the best out there.

We bought this for our 5 year old, for his birthday (January 3rd) - and assembly was hard - there are no written instructions. Some diagrams and pictures, but no details, and therefore pretty tough to assemble. Only one of the cars actually worked (Chick Hicks). Lightning doesn't work at all, which made my son very, very sad. So, we have ordered another Lightning online - could not figure out how to get help/service on the one non-working car. Didn't want to have to return the entire package to Amazon. Bummer. Anyway - will post more when we get the other cars, hopefully they will work well. It WILL be fun if the cars work, my son has enjoyed driving the one car around, but is anxious to race.
If there are problems with this, the only option I found was to ship the entire thing back to Amazon, and that's silly ... the manufacturer only works through retailers, and the purchase through Amazon, comes from Amazon!?!?
