Customer Review: Great Fun and Educational, But Cheap Manufacture

I love Perquackey - - we played it all the time as a family when I was a child. I have never seen it in stores, so being able to purchase it online is great. The game comes with 13 cubes containing letters, a 3-minute timer ("hour" glass), a dice cup, and instructions. It is packaged in an oddly-shaped tin. The game itself is quite simple. Participants take turns spilling the dice and spelling words within the alloted time. Points are assigned for spelling up to 5 3-, 4-, 5-, and so on up to 10-letter words. Bonus points are earned for spelling 5 words in each number of letters category (e.g., bonus points for completing 5 3-letter words, AND 5 4-letter words). Red die are included to make the game more fun and challenging. The game is a great way to encourage youngsters to read and spell phonetically. For example, a roll of a K, A, E, R, and any of several other consonants such as T, M, B .... can be quickly used to spell TAKE, MAKE, BAKE, BARK, MARK - - - elementary school teachers will certainly appreciate the value of this. It is fun and easy to pair a younger child with an adult to form a team. It's a great game just for adults, too, especially fans of other more well-known word games.
There are some manufacturing problems, though. The timer is cheaply made. The caps of mine actually fell off somewhere along the line between manufacuture and arrival at my house, so the sand fell out and the shrink-wrapped product was quite gritty. I was able to recover most of the sand and recap the timer and still use it, however. The tin box is a pain to get open,and it's odd shape makes it a bit more challenging to store alongside other games. It's reasonably priced, but it would have been nice if the manufacturer had included a pencil and blank score pad - - you'll need to provide these yourself to play the game.
Overall, the game is inherently fun and educational, and makes up for the shortcomings of the cheap manufacturing.
