Toys and Games Reviews of My First Lab Duo-Scope MicroscopeCustomer Review: Great home microscope Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and 9-yr daughter love this microscope. I wish I could post the picture of my daughter with a big smile while working with it. I've spent a lot money on junk for my kids, but this microscope is one the smartest purchases I've ever made.
The duo-scope is awesome for looking at some things. For example, we studied a scab. Under the microscope (light from bottom) we could see blood cells, and then with a flip of the switch, we turned on the macro-scope (light from top) and could see details of the harden outer cells.
Construction is of sturdy metal and not the cheap plastic of many kids starter microscopes. The lenses are good for studying common environmental items you can find around your house. This a great tool for getting your kids interested in science.
Customer Review: Product is great but Smells MOLDY!! Summary: 5 Stars
This product must have been stored in a very damp warehouse. It has been exposed to so much mold that it has even saturated the box, foam, and plastic itself of the microscope itself. I have had to place the item outside, as I have allergies to mold. It was also bothersome to others in the household that are not allergic. The product itself seems great, but I'm not sure how long it will take to get the mold smell out. We attempted to enjoy some slides, but my 7 year old son said it was making his nose hurt and his eyes feel funny from the smell. I do believe that delivering items this saturated with mold spores are truly a health hazard, especially considering that this was meant for children. Asthmatic or allergy sensitive children could be made very sick from this as we are.
Customer Review: Wonderful first microscope! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter, who loves science. We have prepared a piece of moss from outside, and observed the cell walls. Also, we have looked at printing output to see the small color dots. She said "It is like looking into another world!".
PROS:
It is surprisingly sturdy with a metal frame.
The two LED lights work very well.
While there is no fine focus, it is not needed, since the main focus is very smooth and has precise travel.
CONS:
Would be nice to have a storage case, but we created our own.
Overall, this microscope impressed me - marketed for children, yet the quality seems like it was built for a professional lab. I wish more kids toys were made like this!
Customer Review: Good scope for the money Summary: 4 Stars
As a physician, I have a great deal of experience with microscopes. The optics on this scope are quite good for the price, and although some parts of the scope are of cheaper quality(such as the battery compartment), they put the money where it counts. Intuitive design, and surprising illumination at high magnification(400x). As a bonus, this scope also features above-stage illumination, which allows examination of opaque objects such as insects- making the scope easier to use for younger kids who cannot prepare traditional slides. Finally, included supplies such as dust cover(!), scalpel, probe, prepared slides, well slide, stain, cover glasses, small petri dish, lens paper and test tube allow the budding scientist to set up a home "lab". Excellent for ages 8-13
Customer Review: Okay for the price Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this as a gift for my 9 year old son. He likes it, and finds it fun exploring the microscopic world. This thing seemed pretty much durable, and could hold up to some beating. I see no good reason for a microscope manufacturer to not put lights on both the top and bottom of a platform, as I find it to be a real necessity to see anything down there. So I thought, it's great that this product has that feature.
The only thing I didn't like about this is that, we can't get the highest magnification to work. I don't know why. I didn't bother that much to figure out what was wrong. My son is pretty much happy with what he can view so far, but we're probably missing a lot for not seeing things on the highest magnification.
