I bought this microscope for my daughter's 9th birthday. When I looked at the box it came in, I thought "hmmm, looks cheap". What a surprise when she opened it! It is very sturdy and made of quality materials. The visual images are great and allow for three magnification levels. What we really like is that there is a light that shines from the bottom, or one from the top (so you can better see the surfaces of things which is great for looking at everyday things around the house like leaves, flowers, dirt, or whatever). It comes with a bunch of tools, some of which a child would definitely need supervision with (a scalpel, glass test tube, petri dish just to name a few). It comes with a couple prepared slides and some blank ones for you to make your own. I would recommend getting some prepared slides sets though. It comes with a booklet that gives you tips and ideas as well (like growing mold). My daughter tires of things very easily, but she absolutely loves this microscope and all her friends want to check it out. She uses it whenever she can. Excellent product and value for the price...don't buy a cheap plastic one that will break in a week.Customer Review: Very good for a child's microscope!!

I read many of the comments on Amazon before purchasing this microscope for my daughter's 6th birthday. I was in Microbiology class at the time and she was very interested in my text book and learning about 'germs'. I am very satisfied with the product. It has the basic features needed to operate. It seems very sturdy and my 6 year old can operate it by herself once I taught her what to do. I still supervise because she could easily break the slide if she's not careful with the course adjustment knob. The 4 prepared slides that come with it are great. We purchased even more slides. Some down sides to this model compared to a 'real' microscope would be that there is no fine adjustment knob, the light diaphragm dial does not seem to effect the amount of light at all, and there is no X1000 lens. However, I did not expect a Lab quality microscope for this price. We have both been very satisfied with this product. As a side note, my 4 year old son also enjoys looking at stuff but he cannot focus by hinself. I have to focus the slide and then he looks at it. It's a great activity to do together. Not something anyone under 6-ish could do alone.Customer Review: No regrets!

I bought this for my daughter's 7th birthday this last week and I have to say that I am impressed. I highly recommend this and I believe it is a reasonable price, well worth it. It is sturdy, well designed, easy to use- has a manual which we have yet to open- and I love that you can look at and/or through your item. Obviously educational. It comes with some glass slides and dyes so you can immediately make your own slides- which turns out to be way more fun and interesting than looking at the pre-made slides that i purchased separately- not as abstract of a concept. my daughter has only played with it a couple times (just got it) but already saved some of her haircut clippings to check out. i am having as much fun as she is- and i was never super interested in this stuff as a kid. i can already see that we may be purchasing some more slide materials in the future and i do wish it had a carrying case. as it is, it will either be displayed on desk or stored in the box it came in. i foresee this getting much use for many years:-)Customer Review: Best Microscope Under $100

If you are buying any other microscope for your child, you are wasting your money! Just read the other reviews and I'll confirm they are correct. This is a fantastic microscope, especially for the price. (I paid $59.95) I've read reviews on many other brands, mostly 100% plastic, which are selling for around $100 (Toys R Us for example) and how frustrated the buyers are with the junky product they bought. My daughter (9 years old) received this gift for Christmas and we spent 4 hours looking through it! The best things we saw were from the water we took from a bird bath outside that had some moss growing in it. We used the suction dropper to grab some water and tiny bits of moss. Under the microscope we found two different types of organisms swimming around! We pull the microscope out about every other week and look for new things to discover! (try a drop of your own blood!) Cons? I wish the light was brighter, especially under the highest magnification and make sure to always use a cover slide!Customer Review: Best microscope for the money!

This purchase was prompted when I made the mistake of buying another brand without reading reviews. I'm so happy with this microscope as it is of a much higher (much, much higher) quality than the other one I bought. Heavier, made of metal, with two different light sources, I tested it before giving my nephews another that didn't work and was very impressed (and entertained!) while using it to view the included slides and examine a knife blade and a napkin...two items that were sitting nearby while I tested it, lol. It was so cool to use the magnification features!!
The ONLY thing that I don't like is that the eye-lens just "sits" inside the tube and if you aren't careful, it will fall out if the microscope is tipped at an angle while you carry it from place to place...a big problem for kids. A piece of scotch tape can prevent the glass lens from falling out, but it's one thing I hope the manufacturer will consider in the future.
