Toys and Games Reviews of Rapid Fire Western Rifle w/ 6 darts & 6 shellsCustomer Review: The greatest non-electric air dart weapon ever devised. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first time- literally the first- that I have seen Buzz Bee Toys come up with something that actually comes close to matching the products manufactured by Nerf. Generally, Nerf leads the way in all regards, both innovation and quality. I still maintain that Buzz Bee Toys must be working harder on the quality side of things- if one of their products doesn't hold up when being carefully used and tested by a 19-year-old who has handled air dart, airsoft, paintball and real firearms as well as used all of them extensively, what do you think is going to happen when someone much younger and with a far more limited understanding of real and simulated firearms uses it?
My first real contact- becoming aware of the name, anyway- with Buzz Bee Toys was when I bought a Hunter bolt-action dart gun at Big Lots the other day. That weapon was interesting but didn't deliver too well in the end, nor was it built very well.
But here's this one. Given an awkward and only sometimes-recognized name, this weapon has impressed me to such a degree that I now regard it as the air dart equivalent of TSD Airsoft's SDM1 M-14 replica airsoft rifle. That is to say, it is a superb and effective weapon that can be depended upon under fire. It is the M1 Garand of air dart weapons, the best all-around weapon in its field.
Due to its actual name being rather unremarkable, I renamed it the M-2009 DC. Why I called it DC is unimportant. The 2009 refers to, what I believe anyway, was its year of debut.
Moving on.
The DC as I have chosen to call it utilizes and involves a long list of particulars.
First, it is a breech-loader and uses a magazine capable of holding some 6-7 rounds. 6 generally works best. Second, its rounds must be loaded into orange shells, then loaded into the magazine. You move the lever forward until it points down, then move it back again until it is lined up with the weapon's stock once again. This process chambers the first round, which can then be fired. You carefully work the lever five more times to load and eject each round. Attempting to do this too quickly can cause jams, which can be cleared easily enough but cost valuable time during a game. Whether its nerf, airsoft, paintball or the real thing, having to clear a weapon jam when you're getting shot at and need a working weapon quite a bit is not fun.
I have yet to find additional magazines available in stores, which would be real nice since having to manually reload the magazine every 6 rounds isn't too fun either. The magazine doesn't take the rounds but so easily, and I really think it could and should have been designed better.
I encountered some difficulty with the weapon at first- jams and misfires- and those do occur from time to time. Continuing the Buzz Bee tradition of trying as hard as possible to make Nerf brand rounds impractical or even impossible to use in Air Blasters weapons, the DC cheerfully jams just a bit more often when using non-Air Blasters brand rounds. Still, I found it to be less of a disaster on that end than the Hunter. Whistlers, fired out of this weapon, are as always fierce. When they don't jam.
Like the TSD SDM1 in airsoft, the DC more than makes up for its flaws and eccentricities. It's a blast to operate, and while I found its ideal firing range to be 15 feet, it isn't unrealistic to hope for a hit at greater ranges than that and within the 15 feet distance, it all but never lets you down.
This is the greatest air dart weapon ever devised. If I had to supply an army with one primary air dart weapon, this would be it. Not only does it make big noise- it is rather loud to operate and I'd recommend loading the first round before the start of a game, especially if acting as a sniper or in a covert capacity- but in the hands of a good operator, it really goes somewhere.
