Our son is 3 years old. I was a bit concerned about the size of the truck at first but after seeing him playing with it for a while, I saw that this was no problem at all.
Unpacking: wish everyone would do it this way!!! Open the box, slide it out, maybe pop out one easy thing and they are off playing - none of this ridiculous wires that you have to undo with pliers and pain for 10 minutes.
The mechanism to lift the trash cans is a little small for his finger motor skills but after some showing and practice he figured it out. The truck is very well built and safe to play with. Figuring out what 'trash' to use took some playing and testing - ended up with shipping cardboard box that I cut in small blocks 1/2 to 1/4 inch in size. This way they do not get stuck in the trash cans, slide around easy and go through the gear pushing it to the back and, they are clean, cheap and replaceable. We bought some extra trash cans to extend the pickup rounds.

If you have (or know of) a child that loves watching the garbage truck dump trash outside, then this is the perfect toy and well worth the money. Bruder has an excellent reputation of making quality products that don't break. I bought a cheapy version at Toys R Us and guess what? It was already broken! (thankfully I could return it) So I upgraded to this Bruder truck and never looked back. My son lays on his side and dreamily plays with this truck every day for quite some time. I gave one to my friend's son for his birthday and he does the same thing. I like that it's simple and allows for him to make up all sorts of scenarios on his own. There's no loud noises or beeps to drive me up the wall either. I bought this "sight unseen" hoping it would work out and will definitely buy other Bruder products because of my experience with this toy.Customer Review: Works, but not cool enough for the price

Got this for my garbage truck-loving 2 year old, and he does like it. However, I don't think it is nearly cool enough or automated enough for the price. 1. No instructions came with it. 2. You have to hold the trash can just right over the hopper, or the trash spills out onto the floor or truck. 3. Kid hasn't figured out how to put the trash can on himself. 4. Not very many things open (as on a real trash truck) - only the back and a sun roof, and the sun roof is a pain in the neck, because it's the only hole in the cab. We bought a WOW toys recycle truck which looks more "baby-ish," but I wish we'd just gotten him another one of those because it is MUCH tougher and has more to do on it.Customer Review: Great truck, and very durable!

Our son has loved this truck. He uses small Lego bricks as garbage, and they pass through the auger into the truck's box with no problem. The arm extends from the truck's side and grabs the garbage can. The can is dragged over to the very side of the truck, then lifted and tilted over the opening. The lifting mechanism is very cleverly designed so that no 'garbage' will fall from the can until the lifting knob is slightly over-rotated, thereby opening the garbage can lid. Sounds complex, but it is well built, and has lasted us a year so far. The Bruder line is very tough, and the plastic is almost indestructible.Customer Review: Great present

My 3 year old grandson loves garbage trucks. He stands outside and watches the trash being picked up each week. I spent some time and researched garbage trucks on the internet and came up with this one for his christmas present. I certainly made the correct decision as he played with it all day. His other presents took a back seat. He hasn't put it down for 3 days and wants to take it everywhere. Great truck good quality and has excellent working parts. Would strongly recommend to everyone.
