Customer Review: This Trumpet is a Bugle

The "Botempi" toy trumpet is a reasonably sturdy plastic toy instrument. It's really a bugle, playing just four pitches (think "Taps"): E-A-C#-E (the two Es being an octave apart). However, the low E and the A are of dubious tuning. This can be a problem if one wishes to use the toy trumpet in conjunction with other instruments (a toy piano or toy clarinet, for example). I'm a composer, and I wrote a little piece for this toy trumpet, the "Botempi" toy clarinet, the "House of Marbles" toy drum (highly recommended), and a Schoenhut toy piano (a fine instrument). I found that I was only able to reliably use the upper two notes (E and C#) of the toy trumpet when accompanying the toy piano or the toy clarinet.
The sound of both the "Botempi" toy wind instruments is close to that of the harmonica (actually, it's a cross between an harmonica and the medieval crumhorn), so don't expect a "trumpet" sound. Still, it's easy to use and sturdy, assuming gentle play. If you don't need the pitches to be accurate, you don't need a lot of notes, and you don't need a toy instrument that sounds like its non-toy counterpart (which may not exist), then this is an amusing and smile-inducing toy instrument.
