I once saw a T-Shirt with the following words on it:
'INSIDE EVERY OLDER PERSON IS A YOUNGER PERSON,
' WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED? '
As an ---ahem -- what is now considered somewhat middle-aged myself, I
can begin to empathise with this statemen. Truly, inside myself there IS a somewhat-advanced-for-her-age 9 year old, wondering...'What the heck HAS happened?'
I think that, as the scientific community advances people's life-span,
people will continue to live longer. (Oh, oh...is this one of those fabled 'senior moments'? The first sentence of this paragraph reminds me uncomfortably of President Bush II's words, "When people are out of work, unemployment results". (Or were those the words of Dan Quayle -- who is younger than both of us?) In any case, I am sure that, at the speed science is increasing both our lifespans and our energy-levels during those life-spans, that we will, sooner or later, see "racing grannies" taking part in Nascar, and other auto -- or even aeroplane -- races! Why not? Think: Charles Laughton, Millicent Fenwick, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, Georgia O'Keefe, Olivia Coolidge, Nora Lofts, Ronald Reagan, Alicia Alonso, a few other people I may not have Grandma Moses!
While I am sure time and modern medicine will sooner or later allow for Nascar Racing, and parachute jumping, and mountain-climbing 90+ year olds, there will also probably, sadly(?) be those elderly who cannot physcially keep up with younger people. These "racing granny" toys are THEIR role-models. Their slogan could be: "We may be slow....but look at us go!" Like the (real!) little boy, who cannot raise his arms more than 5 inches off the table -- but who can draw WONDERFUL pictures --these "racing grannies" show off the ONE characteristic that all winners have in common -- DETERMINATION!
(AND -- they are WIND-UP toys, too! No money has to be spent on batteries, no danger of polluting the environment with improperly disposed-of batteries! Like most toys USED to be made! A great example of the past and the present coming together -- just like older and younger people finding they have at least one thing in common....all are Human Beings! : )
