Toys and Games Reviews of Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light BrushCustomer Review: She loves it Summary: 4 Stars
My daughter recieved this today for her fifth birthday from her grandparents. It was a thoughtful gift for an artistic little girl. But she would have been just as happy with fingerpaints or watercolors--and they would have come without all the plastic and batteries. It might just be that this is one of those things that LOOKS like something familiar--paints, a paintbrush, paper--but just isn't. The paints are a slimy, snot-textured clear goo that somehow activates the paintbrush bristles to change color when you hold it over the pots. That's it, the contraption part is a one-trick pony. Otherwise, you just dip the chunky brush into the paint pot and paint on the special paper. After a few seconds, the color comes up. This is the part where you want it to be something familiar, but it just isn't. The paints don't behave like paint. They're too thick and sticky. It's almost impossible to paint a picture, because you can't see what you're doing with the delay. My daughter couldn't manage her name with the big brush.
She's still playing with it, as I type. She obviously was tickled with her gift. What she's done, 20 minutes in, is take the brush from her water colors and with the paper pad still clipped into the holder thing, is using the light up thing to tell the color, cause it's fun, but painting with the smaller brush where she has some control and precision. She's also using her fingers sometimes. I'm turned off by the snot-texture of the paints, but she's clearly not. And it isn't my fifth birthday after all, so that's ok. I rated it 4 stars, because she's enjoying it.
P.S. The paint pots aren't huge, but a little goes a long way. If you use too much paint, it sits like snot on top of the paper. Not good. My girl has covered six sheets and barely made a dent in the paints. Also, since the paints are clear, I don't think we'll have the same problem we have with water colors. When the watercolors mix, she doesn't want to play with them anymore cause their ugly. Can't see that with these. Also, they don't blend into a muddy brown or black like water colors when they mix. They get a rainbow effect, the colors staying distinct. That part's kinda cool.

Time-tested Fun With its light-up brush and colors that reveal only with special paper, this Crayola set brings new life to an activity kids have always loved. Great for beginning artists, the Wonder Magic Light Brush is good at painting broad colorful strokes, and it's exciting to see as the colors appear a second or two after drawn on the page. The brush bristles aren't fine enough for very detailed work, but as a toy, even young masters should enjoy this new way of playing with colors.
