Toys and Games Reviews of Dippin Dots Frozen Dot MakerCustomer Review: Too much expectation on this, I think it's great Summary: 3 Stars
Ok, so maybe Dippin' Dots shouldn't have put their name on this because too many people expect to actually make something very similar to the real product you can buy in stores. You cannot. Dippin Dots are frozen at a temperature we can't possibly achieve in our home and this is a simple toy, you cannot expect the same flavor and ingredient results either! With that said, here is my review:
The 3 bulb shaped containers could have been higher quality. Two of ours leak at the seam, but I will be calling the company for replacements. And even if I only ever get one to work, that will be enough because one packet of the Dippin' Dots powder makes enough to fill all six disks. Having 3 going at the same time would be a waste unless you are choosing another container to freeze the product.
A TIP FOR MIXING THE POWDER: the instructions say to pour the powder and water into one of the bulbs, put the cap on and shake it rigorously. Thinking that could be a disaster, I chose to mix it in an empty water bottle before pouring it in. Glad I did that since my bulbs do leak and they are not very water tight even with the cap on.
The disks are of good quality and seal well. The dots remove rather easily from the disks as well, it's a lot easier to remove them over a large bowl rather than try to get them into the tiny cups they include in the box. Also, I suggest not stacking them for freezing. Even after the 3 hour mark, I spilled the solution all over my freezer. So, I made two piles and staggered them. They froze quickly afterward. I have chosen not to use the pens as I just see that as a disastrous mess, so I cannot comment on their function. My boys are 6 and 4 and it's probably better for an older child with better coordination.
MY BOYS' REVIEW: They thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, shaking the water bottle, allowing the powder solution to empty into the cup and then emptying the cup into the disks and watching the fluid fill all the little round openings. The dots are a lot bigger than real Dippin' Dots, again how can one expect to make them that tiny and my boys enjoyed the flavors. I tasted it, it's not the same as the real thing, but that isn't the point really. They enjoyed the process, they made it themselves and the flavor is favorable regardless.
I think all in all it's a decent buy for something new and fun to do. I gave it 3 stars because they could have done better on the quality of the plastic bulbs which is a vital part of the item being used as it's been created. Sure we could just pour the solution from the water bottle into the little cup, but just not as fun as they make it out to be. If the bulbs prove to lose their function, that is how we will do it in the future.
