Customer Review: great idea, poorly designed

I assisted my 10 year old with her science project which involved the diet coke and mentos experiment. I thought this was a great idea. Had it worked like it was intended to it would have been great. There are two holes at the bottom of the tube that a pin slides through. The pin allows the mentos to rest on it until it is pulled and the mentos fall into the coke bottle. On top of the pin is a hard plastic sleeve that wraps around the tube. It can slide up or down the tube easily. It is supposed to slip down over the two holes to close them up once the pin is pulled. The pressure in the bottle and tube was so high that the soda would spew out of the two holes and lift this plastic sleeve up. Essentially you have soda spewing out of each of these two holes and the top of the tube. Our experiment measured the height of the soda which we could not measure acurately if half of the soda is squirting out of the sides rather than the top. The experiment only worked when I held the plastic sleeve down over the holes. I in turn was soaked with diet coke. Mom took one for the team. This flaw caused us a considerable expense because we had to repeat the experiment several times.
