Toys and Games Reviews of Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Mega Mission HelmetCustomer Review: It's really not that hard to write drivers & applications properly, Bandai. Summary: 3 Stars
Sigh, I finally got this thing downloading missions but it was a bit of a feat. This review is really designed to help out anyone else under pressure to get the latest missions downloaded.
As an IS operations manager for an F100 company with 5 boys and around five PC's on our home network , i'm used to being the family support guy.
I'm not used to becoming so frustrated that I feel like kicking things.
Here is what you need to do to avoid frustration:
1.Find the software:
Took a while to find this , head first to this website http://www.bandai.com/powerrangers/
There you can find the application "2.0" which you can download and install.
2.Install the software:
Please make sure to install it under the profile that will use it.
I first installed it under my profile and then logged in as my 5 year old. Running the application that way will prompt a series of code errors.
3. Get the right driver:
Once you have it installed connect the helmet.
You may get prompted to allow the computer to search for a driver online.
This will fail. You need to choose those dialogs that will allow you to search manually.
If you accepted defaults you will find your driver here :
C:\Program Files\Power Ranger\Driver
4. Getting Missions.
The rest is pretty intuitive.
Launch the application and choose which mission you want and download away.
The toy is fun and it seems durable.
The online component really really needed to have been designed a bit better. Additionally it might have been better to allow for more than one mission to have been uploaded to the helmet at a time. While I have typed this review Mr. 5 year old has been back looking for more missions twice.
I'm now off to figure out his XO laptop. I swear to goodness next Christmas every toy will be made of wood. It was good enough for me punks !
Customer Review: Let's Get Real!! Summary: 3 Stars
Enough already! Let's get real about this. I consider myself to have a bit more than average skills with tech stuff, but installing the software and driver for this toy is unreal! I agree with the other review that you should just throw away the paper instructions. They are worthless.
I've been at it for 90 minutes now and it's been a lot of trial and ERROR in installing the software and driver. I'm now waiting for the thing to finish downloading the missions which warns you that it may take up to 10 minutes. The other reviewers have posted instruction that are very helpful, more so than anything the manufacturer provided. They should be ashamed of not providing either the software or clear and completd instruction for making this thing work. Let' face it, kids want to enjoy this and parent want plug and play. It shouldn't be this difficult. Maybe eventually our 8 year old will get to play this thing and we'll see if his enjoyment surpassed all of the trouble there's been with getting it to work.
Customer Review: SOFTWARE NOT INCLUDED! Summary: 3 Stars
The software for this toy is not included which is very disappointing for a toy with this high price tag. To top it off the website from which you are supposed to download the software from is constantly overloaded, so good luck ever even getting to download it. A very cool toy with a lot of promise, but Bandai did not think it through all the way. There will be a lot of disappointed kids on Christmas because the website was too overloaded for everyone who purchased the helmet to be able to download the software. This was a cost cutting tactic by the company so they would not have to mass produce the software discs but instead there are now a LOT of customers struggling to get the helmet to work.
Customer Review: Christmas Horror Summary: 1 Stars
Frustrating is the answer you are looking for. Download missions is a horror. But worse is that the design of the heavy helmet does not stay securely on your childs head. I can not get it to stop sliding off all 3 of my son's heads. The cool missions tell them to "jump" and "dive". Real good fun when they were tripping and falling because they are trying to hold this thing on their head while running. The head strap is not sufficient to secure it to the childs head. It needs a good chin strap to assist it from falling off. A couple more drops and this thing will be broke in no time. What a waste of money, I could have done something better for my sons with all the money I spent on this toy.
Customer Review: Good toy, lowsy instructions Summary: 3 Stars
Cool toy. The paper instructions...just toss them right in the trash as soon as you open the package as they're pretty much useless -> I'm just trying to save you time on this one. The missions have to be downloaded from the web. At this moment, it's 2:15 PM on Christmas Even (2007). Perhaps there are a lot of people downloading the software and I'm just standing in a virtual customer service line. It took me about thirty minutes to download at 1300 kbs/sec...hey, I'm at 96% done! Once again, the paper instructions failed to follow what has happened on my laptop - someone at Bandai must have slept in late on the day of the meeting, I guess.
