Customer Review: In spite of the fun, loom requires LOTS of set-up time

My six-year-old daugher received the loom for Christmas. She loved it and went right to work. After weaving for over an hour, she needed help to tie it off. To finish, you must tie forty strings into knots, which is really no problem. The difficulty arises in re-threading the loom, which is very similar to threading 80 needles. I got to 41 in an hour and quit. While I'm sure my time will improve as I get more practice, in reality, the loom will probably go back in the box and onto the shelf. Too bad, because the idea is fabulous; the set-up requires more time than I can reasonably provide each time we want to start a new project.

Works just like the real thing! Your child can weave to their hearts content, producing real cloth with this award-winning wooden loom from BRIO. Create original designs or follow patterns in the instructions (included). Although rated at age 5 and up, this is a real working loom and it can be quite challenging at first to learn to use. Loom measures 11" x 16".When it's time to move on from making potholders, crafters young and old will love working on this beautiful BRIO loom. Straight from the box (or in storage), the beechwood loom is just over 3 inches tall. Unfold it, put the side slats in place, and you have a ready-to-work loom measuring 10.5 by 16.25 by 11.25 inches. With warp threads in place and the start of the weft pattern as an example, the beginning weaver will find it easy and satisfying to complete his or her first project. Detailed instructions acquaint the new weaver with loom nomenclature and explain a step-by-step weaving process, including joining threads, finishing the fabric, setting up the warp for a new piece, and a description of linen and twist warps. Weavers can create a fabric up to 40 threads wide (approximately 5.5 inches) on this loom, but the fabric length is optional. The set includes three weft threads on three beechwood shuttles. This is not only a toy, but also a tool to teach weaving fundamentals. --Ava Natov
