Customer Review: Racing the Old-Fashioned Way

Racing board games are exciting but in them players usually have little or no interaction with each other. Hence the many racing games that involve guns on cars or car battles in some way so that players will have to interact with each other. Back in the day, the Romans had popular racing events with chariots and horses in which they tried to beat each other by getting in front of each other or trying to force each other into walls.
Ave Caesar is a game that tries to re-create this race formula. And it succeeds marvelously! Players pick out their color of chariot that they will race and then they have just enough cards in their race deck to make it around the track three times. Sometimes you have to decide to take the inner lane or the outer lane depending on where your opponents are racing at. And if that weren't enough, each racer must either, on the first or second lap, drive by Caesar's box and shout "Ave Caesar!".
The game is easy to learn and fun to play. It is playable solo or with two players but as the number of players increases so too does the strategy. My only negative about this game is that, although there are two tracks provided, I would have like to have had another two tracks on another board come with the game. But leaving that aside this is a marvelously designed game. It is easy to learn, easy to play, strategically deep, and re-creates the Romans chariot races very well.
This IS racing..... the old-fashioned way!
