Toys and Games Reviews of Star Trek Original Series Phaser Pistol by Art AsylumCustomer Review: Great prop replica for an exceptionally reasonable price! Summary: 5 Stars
Like many of the other reviewers, I was able to make first hand comparisons between this Art Asylum product and the previous offering by Playmates. With its accurate scale, attention to authentic details, and its detachable Phaser 1 & 2, this TOS Phaser is clearly in an entirely different league than the Playmates version. I also own a high-end collector's quality 'hero' reproduction of the TOS Phaser and, although this Art Asylum replica is by no means a $$$ collector's piece, it holds up surprisingly well by comparison considering its low price. Sure, there's several details that might have been done better, but keep in mind the low cost of this particular item. All in all, Art Asylum is to be applauded for the level of authenticity they've achieved at such a reasonable price. Now, if only those of us outside of the U.S. were able to purchase this item through Amazon.com. Because I'm in Canada, I had to buy mine through another internet vendor (for $10USD more).
Customer Review: Much better than the playmates version Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Playmates version years ago and my major gripe was that the phaser was a one piece unit. Not only does the Art Asylum phaser seperate into two units (though only the smaller unit works when this is done as it contains the batteries)it has several more functions. You can dial the phaser whine up or down or even to off and the emitter pulsates correspondingly. The details and craftmanship are sharp and more streamlined than the Playmates version. Even though my six year has never seen the old series he loves to play with this toy as it has so many different settings and functions. Also, it is a little harder to reassemble the two pieces but he sure put it to the test and it held together fine. As a fan of the original series I wish this has been available when I was a kid. Oh well. I sure hope Art Asylum follows up with the communicator next. Bottom line: at the price offered here you can't beat this deal.
Customer Review: Where was this toy in 1967? Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, a toy version of the original series Phaser that's nearly perfect. Actually it's two toys in one because you get a detachable "type one" phaser which contains all the sound effects and it's own flashing light as well. Looking the whole thing over, I can find maybe one missing detail, but when the rest of the styling is so accurate, I'm not gonna complain too much. One thing that would have made the toy a little bit nicer is if they had chrome plated the nozzle at the front ( which is the way the toy looks in publicity photos ) and the control wheel that raises the "targeting sight" for a more 'realistic' look. But again, when the pains this company took to make an authentic looking toy are so obvious, I can only kvetch so much! I hope that Art Asylum will continue the trend and make a matching Communicator and Tricorder ( the correct size, please!) with the same attention to detail as they've done here.

Customer Review: Art Asylum Delivers a Great Toy Summary: 5 Stars
I actually bought this toy at Toys-r-us WAAAY back when it was first released. At the time, it was the closest thing I had seen in person to a proper Original series phaser prop.. It still is.
I know that it has one or two minor inaccuracies (one being the color of the handle) but for the price, it is DEFINITELY worth the money.
As-is, you could probably display it as a prop, or you could put a little work into it and make it shine. How much work would be up to you, I have seen Metal upgrade parts on some sites.
The ONLY way this would have been better is if it had had the metal parts but as another reviewer already said, that would have driven the cost up near the Master-Replicas mark.
If you are a Trek fan of any kind, buy one of these (and the communicator as well) I promise that you will NOT be disappointed.
