Toys and Games Reviews of Air Hogs Black Sharp Shooter Ch BCustomer Review: Really Fun, But Battery Needs Longer Life Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Honestly, I've been thinking of getting one of these for a few years. I have a high ceiling living room and thought it would be fun to try it out. I will tell you the pros & cons that I have noticed so far.
Cons:
1. Battery life is short. You usually get about 5 mins of really good use before the battery starts slowing down or stops. The battery is a rechargeable button style or watch style battery.
2. Flying the helicopter takes patience and practice. The first few attempts resulted in major crashes or bad take offs. Be careful not to hit anything in flight, result will wobble the flight and crash the helicopter almost 100% of the time.
3. The controls are at times slow to react. You must plan your flight a few seconds before the controls will actually take affect. If you want to let off of the speed, then do it before you actually expect to slow down. Do not be surprised if your helicopter continues to rev it's propeller even after it has hit the ground and you are no longer using the controls.
4. The projectile missiles are fun to try, but ultimately a negative to the helicopter. You will find that with the battery life, using the missiles and flying with their weight - causes the charge to deplete much quicker. Try the helicopter without the missiles loaded and you will notice a much faster take off and longer battery life.
Pros:
1. There are two settings (i.e. A & B Frequency) so more than one helicopter can be flown at the same time without radio interference. This makes it fun to attempt dog fight simulations or obstacle course races.
2. The controls may be a little hard to pick up, but when you do get a touch for them - it really pays off. Once I had flown the helicopter 10-15 times, I was able to really have some fun. I started attempting very difficult landing pad locations and flights through narrow entrances. They all can be done once you feel comfortable with the specific helicopter and it's controls. The speed & rotation is a little unique to each of these because of the delicate nature of the toggle controller. Gradual and slight control manipulation is not only possible, but neccessary to really master exact movement. All of these come with time, but it's worth it.
3. The battery is rechargeable, but only after connecting to the controller which requires AA batteries. This makes it easy to charge everywhere you go. The AA batteries offer dozens or maybe even a hundred charges at a reasonable price. There is a light on the controller that tells you if it is charging or completed.
4. The helicopter is fairly rugged and well built. The first time I had a major crash, I thought it was done. But it came right back and responded as normal. Things like the blades on the propellers are a soft plastic, so a little more durable. Just make sure they appear level or unwarped / unbent before returning the helicopter to flight - slight bends make a major change in the flight. These are easy adjustments once you recognize what you are looking for. I have now crashed this against walls, the TV, couch, and many other surfaces dozens of times. It still works great, but takes a high dive to cement could be much worse. I recommend flying over carpet or other softer surfaces - this will greatly reduce the impact and ultimately give a longer life to the helicopter.
5. This is not a speed helicopter, but a control and maneuver helicopter. This means you actually feel like you are mastering the obstacle side of flying - not just racing into a crash. I like that I can give myself a goal of flying under a kitchen chair or other task - and actually do it after a few attempts. The challenge side of this toy is really it's gift - giving you many hours of enjoyment and replay value. The controls are delicate but never feel impossible. This makes it a fun toy to try with friends or teenaged children.
As a toy, this is not a small child's toy. It would make a much more appreciated item for a flight enthusiast or a patient person that loves gadgets. I think any age could appreciate this helicopter, but the time and skill factor required should be taken into consideration if shopping for someone else. I got this as a gift, and I really enjoy it a lot. I had just as much fun on the 50th flight as I did on the first. What a fun toy.
