USA and USSR themed unicorns. Is there anything cooler and more magical than that? You can own a piece of history in the form of creatures from the world of fantasy.
The problem is, these aren't your average Cold War unicorn toys. After my set arrived from True Tiger (via Amazon), I played around with them a bit, marveling at the quality craftsmanship. Before bed, I placed them on a shelf above my desk with my other collectible toys. Feeling that my collection was at last complete, I contentedly drifted away to dreamland.
A loud "ZWAP!" jolted me from my slumber. Disoriented, I searched around the dark bedroom trying to determine what woke me. A flash of light and booming "KPOW!" from the toy shelf drew my attention. Uneasy, I rose from bed and walked over to the shelf, shielding my face from the light and tiny sparks that flew in all directions. What greeted me was a scene of utter destruction. Toys and pieces of toys lay scattered about. A tin robot was crumpled, limbless with scorch marks across its chassis. A LEGO(tm) helicopter was in pieces, it's tiny pilot melted almost beyond recognition. Hot Wheels Redline cars were piled up, tires burning. Through the black smoke I saw my 60th Anniversary Thomas the Tank Engine, faceless. My Darth Vader Potato Head now resembled a baked potato.
In the center of the mayhem battled the Cold War unicorns. They lunged and parried with their horns, occasionally letting loose a searing blast of energy. These two superpowers may have been built to take it, but my other toys were not faring so well. Pressed into service, GI Joe rode atop the USA unicorn and Cobra Commando clung to the Soviet Union unicorn for dear life. Knowing I had to act quickly, I grabbed two empty coffee cups from my desk and slammed them down over the two unicorns. They shuddered and sizzled for another minute but eventually all movement ceased. I stacked some heavy encyclopedias on top the mugs and tried to settle back to sleep.
The next day I cleaned up the carnage as best I could and released the unicorns from their porcelain prisons. In the light of day they appeared normal, lifeless. Joe and Cobra had seen better days so I retired them to the VA hospital drawer with the other damaged with toys. Before bed that night, I built a wall between the two unicorns out of my wooden block collection. That seemed to do the trick and an uneasy peace prevails to this day.
Would I recommend Cold War Unicorns Play Set? Absolutely! These things kick @$$! But I would either keep them in the original packaging or separate them at night. These two superpowers should never be in close proximity when the lights go out. For not having a warning on the package, and for the damage incurred to the rest of my collection, I have to deduct two stars.
